Nelle

Harper Lee didn't use her first name in print because she didn't want it to be pronounced, "Nellie."

Lee and Truman Capote grew up as neighbors and playmates in Monroeville, Alabama. She would later accompany him to Kansas to assist with research for In Cold Blood.

Her father, A.C. Lee, was a lawyer, newspaper editor and politician.

The manuscript was originally titled Atticus, and Lee wanted Spencer Tracy to play the lead.

"When you're at the top, there's only one way to go. I said what I had to say."
